Setting out from the South, we come across a long and well-equipped beach. Little known to foreign tourists, it is therefore the quietest of them all. This beach, near to El Altet airport, is officially called Playa del Saladar due to the salt pans that used to exist nearby. However, it is popularly known as Playa de Urbanova, the name of the residential complex facing it. Free from parking problems, bathers can stretch out comfortably on the sand, and enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the city and the bay of Alicante.
Postiguet Beach
Right in the city centre, and boasting a palm-lined promenade, we find Playa del Postiguet. Situated next to the leisure district at the city's marine complex, it is cleaned daily and offers a wide range of services both to bathers and visitors to the surrounding area. Development work at its northern corner, near the local station for the 'trenet', or coastal railway that runs between Alicante and Denia, has recovered the strip of beach known as Playa del Cocó, where local fishermen used to beach their boats.
Albufereta Beach
Going Northeast, we quickly arrive at Playa de la Albufereta, named after the small coastal lake or 'albufera' that once existed on the spot. This lake used to have its own harbour around which the Roman-Iberian village of Lucentum, the origin of modern Alicante, sprang up. This beach, boasting good facilities, enjoys a privileged situation, sheltered from the currents and is an excellent place to practise water sports and swim in safety.
San Juan Beach
With the cape's lighthouse now behind us, we come to Playa de San Juan, the most beautiful beach in the province of Alicante. San Juan beach boasts almost seven kilometres of spacious, wide beach with fine sand. The numerous shops, restaurants and other leisure establishments offer a wide range of supplementary activities including a superb 18-hole golf course just a stone's throw away. Moreover, it features all the usual community services, since Playa de San Juan has merged with the city, becoming one of its residential areas.
Almadraba Beach
Continuing along the coast, we come across another sandy beach, the Playa de la Almadraba. Smaller in size than the other beaches, it is used almost exclusively by the residents of the surrounding complexes.
Cabo de Las Huertas - Coves
Soon we arrive at Cabo de las Huertas, a spot whose ragged outline conceals a string of quiet, rocky coves, Cala de los Judíos being a typical example. Their remoteness and difficult access means that two of them, Cantalares and Palmera, are frequented by nudists.
